The Department of Agriculture and Food Technology of the Faculty of Industrial Technology was established at the University of Vocational Technology Ratmalana in 2008. Department of Agriculture and Food Technology is one of the four departments in the Faculty of Industrial Technology, and current Head of Department is Mr.U.A.S.K.Edirisinghe. Today, the departmental cadre comprises 10 Academic Staff members, One Computer Application Assistant, One Laboratory Attendant and One Office Aid. The Academic Staff, specialized in different disciplines of Agriculture and Food Technology, conducts undergraduate courses in English medium and their research activities. Currently the Department Offers Bachelor of Technology Degree in Food Process Technology four-year degree. The degree program compress of eight semesters and first six semesters (core program) in compulsory for all students. During 7th and 8th semesters, students can select specialization on their preference and performance. Department advert all students to Industry based three months of training industry exposure plus six months Inplant training to get practical experience during 2nd and 5th semesters. Also, all students are required to conduct individual research project to fulfillment of the degree program.
The department conducts a compressive course in Food Process Technology encompassing all the basic disciplines such as Food Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Analysis, Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food Preservation, Food Product Development, Food and Nutrition, Post-harvest Science & Technology, Food Hygiene & Plant Sanitation, Quality Management, Statistics, Sensory Evaluation, Dairy Product Technology, Fish and Meat product Technology, Fruit & Vegetables product technology, Spices and Herbal Product Technology, Bakery Product Technology, Food Packaging, Marketing Management, Waste management and Cleaner Production, Nanotechnological applications.There are three laboratories in Department of Agriculture and Food Technology as Food Processing Laboratory, Food Analysis Laboratory and Food Microbiology Laboratory.
At the present there are more than 300 students following this degree program offered by the department under two batches as weekday and weekend. During the last two years, Department of Agriculture and Food Technology has been shown the best performances in the university by formulating more than 100 of innovative products and exhibited them FoodEx 2019 exhibition and TecEx 2019 exhibition. Moreover, Department and Agriculture and Food Technology was participated at International Exhibition of Pro-Food Pro-Pack in 2018 and 2019 under Institutional Category and achieved three awards in 2018 as the Winner of Commercial Viable Product for “Garnaal Prawn Mix Powder”, Winner of Best Stall in Institutional category, 2nd Runner up of Commercial Viable Product for “Herbal Ice Cream” and also achieved four awards in 2019 as Winner of Most Innovative Product for “Gingaloe – Ginger and Alovera Jujubes”, 1st Runner up of Commercial Viable Product for “Nutra Plus Ice Cream – Chickpea and Date Ice Cream”, 1st Runner up of Best Innovation that promote Food Safety for “True Cinnamon Hand Wash” and 2nd Runner up of Most Innovative Product for “Cincu Ice Cream”.
The Department of Agriculture has a strong commitment towards the research in various disciplines. Academic staff engage in high quality research projects of local and international relevance. Research among students is also encouraged. The annual International Research Symposium of University of Vocational Technology Ratmalana gives a forum to present research to scientific community in Sri Lanka. The Staff and students of Department of Agriculture and Food Technology actively engaged & presented publications in this symposium.
